This year, India will celebrate its 72nd Independence Day 2018 on this 15th August. The entire nation will immerse in the celebrations of this significant national festival. All these years, as a nation, we have grown, learned, transformed and advanced in all fields.
How about visiting a place that gives you the patriotic feel this time?
Don’t waste time only in Independence Day movies, Let’s not forget freedom fighters struggle and be a witness to their sacrifices through our eyes in various patriotic places, where many of them lost there life.
Here is my list of historical places to visit on this Independence Day, to understand and feel proud of our heritage.

Whenever we talk about Independence Day, Delhi flashes in our mind with views of its different heritage structures.

The biggest monument in Delhi and a World Heritage Site according to UNESCO, the Red Fort is the venue which witnesses the national flag hoisting and speech by the Prime Minister of India. The colossal fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639.

Standing at the heart of the National Capital Delhi, India Gate was built in honor of 82,000 Indian Army soldiers who gave their lives in the First World War and Anglo-Afghan War. The walls of India Gate have names of these brave martyrs inscribed on them.
The ever-glowing Amar Jawan Jyoti was lit up in 1971 in order to pay tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the fight for Bangladesh’s independence.

Chandra Shekhar Azad Park

The Sangam City of Allahabad is a beautiful place to visit and enjoy Independence Day celebrations. The markets of the city are filled with stalls selling various items marking the arrival of this patriotic festival.
Chandra Shekhar Azad Park of Allahabad has a great association with the Indian freedom movement. It was known as Alfred Park or Company Garden during the British rule.
Chandra Shekhar Azad had taken a pledge never to be caught by the British and when he was cornered by the British, in this very park, he decided to use his last bullet to become a martyr instead of breaking his vow.

Sabarmati Ashram

Ahmedabad is the city of Sabarmati Ashram, which was one of the hubs of the Indian freedom movement. Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, it was originally called the Satyagraha Ashram.
It was the grounds for Mahatma Gandhi to train activists to join his non-violent, civil disobedience and Swadeshi movements for Independence.

Located in Gujarat, Porbandar is the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi. Kirti Temple and the House of Mahatma Gandhi are two important structures here which are associated with Gandhi, the man who contributed greatly in achieving India’s independence.

Located near Surat, Dandi is the production center of salt in India. It is here where the famous Dandi March was launched by Mahatma Gandhi in the year 1930.
Thousands of people followed Gandhi in this non-violent struggle for Independence. The place holds important historic importance and is an important landmark in India’s struggle for independence.

4. Kolkata: Places to visit on independence day
Mangal Pandey Garden

Kolkata is still having a colonial charm and it has been a land of many patriots. This is the place where the famous freedom fighter Mangal Pandey raised his voice and started the first rebel against the British Empire.
In Mangal Pandey Garden, he was hung but it created a revolt in the whole country. The park is commemorative of his fight against the British, enabling us to gain our Independence. There is a bust of Mangal Pandey immortalizing him as an integral part of the freedom movement in India.

Gandhi Ji issued a call for the Quit India Movement on 8th August 1942 at the famous August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai. It was a call to mobilize the masses with a commitment of ‘Do or Die’.
This movement was very strong and the British realized that they had lost their hold on India. The British tried to suppress this movement through lathi charge and tear gas.

Wagah Border

Located near Amritsar, the Wagah Border is quite famous for the flag-lowering ceremony held here every day since 1959. Every evening before sunset, the ceremony takes place where both the BSF and the Pakistan Rangers lower the flags of their respective nations.

Jallianwala Bagh

Jaliianwala Bagh is the infamous site which witnessed the massacre of thousands of non-violent protesters on 13th April 1919. This is a place which is sure to make you feel nostalgic about the innocent people who lost their lives on that ill-fated day.
The garden is now converted into a national monument in honor of all the deceased people. The bullet marks can still be seen on the walls of the garden.

Cellular Jail

It is Known as Kalapani during the British rule. The cellular jail in Port Blair was an infamous prison which was used by the British to keep the caught freedom fighters as prisoners.
This jail is a reminder of what our freedom fighters went through to fight for the freedom, which we now take for granted.
Made in the middle of the ocean, Constructed after the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny, the prison was the site of many horrors cast upon the trapped freedom fighters. this jail was a place of exile for political prisoners, including notable freedom fighters like Battukeshwar Dutt and Veer Savarkar.
Today it has been converted into a museum where you can see the hardships that the inmates had to endure, including displays of various means used to torture inmates.
This jail is a reminder of what our freedom fighters went through to fight for the freedom, which we now take for granted.

Jhansi Fort

Popularly known as ‘Rani Jhansi ka Quila’, Jhansi Fort is the symbolic monument of India’s First War for Independence in the year 1857. Rani Lakshmi Bai, the legendary queen of Jhansi fought bravely with the British when they captured the fort and succumbed to death fighting for her kingdom.

Laungewala and Tanot Border

The Jaisalmer Border divides India from Pakistan and is a thrilling place to visit if you want to feel patriotism this Independence Day.
The Laungewala and Tanot border posts are the major attractions here along with Jaisalmer War Museum and Indira Gandhi Canal.
This is the place where one can meet Indian Soldiers who protect the country from the neighboring country of Pakistan.

10. Dras, Jammu, and Kashmir: Places to visit on independence day
Kargil war memorial

Kargil war memorial was built by the Indian army in honor of the martyrs of the Kargil war. The Sandstone wall in the middle of the memorial has the names of all the Indian army soldiers who lost their lives inscribed on it.
The Tiger Hill and Tololong Hill are the territories recaptured by the Indian army after defeating Pakistani soldiers and are visible from this memorial.

Each of these places is associated with the Independence of India. Walking down these places on Independence Day 2018 will fill you with pride and a sense of patriotism which cannot be explained but only felt.
Just writing about all these places makes me so proud that I belong to a country of such brave citizens.
